Enlisted in New Zealand Expeditionary Force and posted to Main Force Staff, Auckland, 10 August 1914.

Attached to Maori Contingent, Avondale Camp, Auckland, 13 October 1914; Ceases to be attached to Maori Contingent and returned to Staff post, Auckland, 15 February 1915. Taken on strength, 2nd Maori Contingent, Avondale Camp, Auckland, 8 June 1915. Embarked on board HMNZT 'Waitemata' and proceeded overseas, 18 September 1915.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt, 26 October 1915 and marched in to Zeitoun Camp. Transferred to New Zealand Pioneer Battalion, 1 March 1916. Embarked on board HMT 'Canada' and proceeded overseas from Port Said, Egypt to France, 9 April 1916.

Disembarked Marseilles, France, 14 April 1916. Attached for duty with New Zealand Trench Mortar Battery, Rouen, 28 April 1916; ceases to be attached to New Zealand Trench Mortar Battery, 14 June 1916; rejoins unit in the field, 18 June 1916. Detached from New Zealand Pioneer Battalion and placed on New Zealand Nominal Roll, 27 July 1916; attached to New Zealand Infantry and General Base Depot, Etaples, 30 July 1916.

Reported to New Zealand Convalescent Hospital and taken on strength, Hornchurch, England, 4 August 1916.

Embarked onboard HMNZT 'Remuera' for return to New Zealand, 19 Septmber 1916. Arrived New Zealand, 5 November 1916. Discharged, 5 March 1917.
