'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He took his guns into action over exposed ground under very heavy shell fire, and, although suffering heavy casualties, his great coolness and presence of mind enabled him to hold off the enemy's attack under very trying conditions. He was himself badly wounded during the operations.'
