Mentioned in Despatches 'Operations from 20th September 1916 to 26th February 1917. During the period that the New Zealand Artillery was at the Somme this NCO displayed great courage under fire. On one occasion he guided ammunition wagons to the advanced position of the Battery in Devil's Valley, five hundred yards west of Delville Wood, when the roads were almost impassable owing to heavy shelling. Again on a later date he acted as guide and showed great courage and resource in guiding his wagons successfully through heavy barrage fire and in helping teams in distress. His
gallantry and devotion to duty were an example to the other men.'
