War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 13 October 1914; found guilty, 18 November 1914, of attempting to break ship: awarded 168 hours' detention with loss of pay; disembarked Alexandria, 3 December 1914. Charged with drunkenness while defaulting, and using obscene language, and insolence to an NCO, Ismailia, 11 February 1915: remanded; elected to have Court Martial [no further details recorded]. Admitted to NZ Field Ambulance, Gallipoli, 11 June 1915; discharged to duty, 13 June 1915. Appointed Acting Corporal, 1 July 1915; Sergeant (date indecipherable). Disembarked Alexandria, 27 December 1915 (general Gallipoli evacuation). Promoted Company Sergeant Major, 1 March 1916. Marched into NZ Base Depot, Etaples, 3 August 1916.
