Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. When his officer and platoon sergeant became casualties early in the attack he took command of his platoon. Though severely wounded he cotinued to advance, and consolidated his position of the line. He took command of a number of other men in addition to his own, and showed great skill in handling his Lewis guns and making dispositons so as to minimize casualties. He was under heavy fire throughout,and showed magnificent courage and determination.'

East of St Julien on the 4th instant this man took charge of his section, after the section commander had been killed, and carried on in a most capable manner exhibiting the utmost coolness and disregard of personal safety. He led his men with fine determination and good judgement and inspired confidence in all. He did excellent work during the consolidation and
afterwards rendered valuable assistance in attending and arranging for the evacuation of wounded. His work throughout was of a very high standard.'
