'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. When his officer and platoon sergeant became casualties early in the attack he took command of his platoon. Though severely wounded he cotinued to advance, and consolidated his position of the line. He took command of a number of other men in addition to his own, and showed great skill in handling his Lewis guns and making dispositons so as to minimize casualties. He was under heavy fire throughout,and showed magnificent courage and determination.'

He led his men with fine determination and good judgement and inspired confidence in all.
