'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the advance West of Passchendaele on 12th October, when his Officer was killed, this noncommissioned officer carried on and located positions for his guns, and supervised his men under heavy fire, until seriously wounded himself. He set a splendid example of gallantry and determination.'
