Mentioned in Despatches 'During enemy raid on T.88 Houplines Sector on 15/11/16. Although surrounded by enemy and 50 of his team had become casualties, Corporal Stuart successfully guarded and kept his machine gun in action until enemy raiding party was repulsed.'

During the advance West of Passchendaele on 12th October, when his Officer was killed, this noncommissioned officer carried on and located positions for his guns, and supervised his men under heavy fire, until seriously wounded himself.
