Mentioned in Despatches

'Operations Somme: 25th September/4th October 1916. For devotion to duty at all times, and in particularly during the period 25th-29th September 1916 in Grove Alley and Goose Alley (Somme.). These two trenches, which we had occupied, were heavily shelled for several days. 2nd Lieutenant Rutherford, who possesses the faculty of remaining cheerful under all conditions, and of infecting his men with the same spirit, was in command of a Strong Point in Goose Alley, and in spite of the enemy?s bombardment he and his platoon were always found to be in the best of spirits. He has a wonderful influence over his men and the example which he has always set, under extremely adverse conditions, has been of incalculable value.'
