Distinguished Service Order 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the fighting at Gravenstafel on 4 October 1917, he showed great gallantry in the command of his Battalion and repeatedly went through the enemy barrage, steadying and encouraging his men, and directing the consolidation of the captured positions. His courage and coolness did much to inspire all ranks and the success of the operations at that place was largely owing to his personal efforts.'
