War service: Egypt, Gallipoli Embarked Wellington, 16 October 1914; disembarked Alexandria, Egypt, 3 December 1914. Found guilty, 26 February 1915, of insolence to and NCO, or using threatening language to an NCO: awarded 7 days' confined to barracks. Embarked Alexandria with unit to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli Campaign), 12 April 1915. Admitted to No.16 Casualty Clearing Station, Mudros, 20 August 1915 (debility); transferred to England, 20 August 1915; to Duchess of Connaught Canadian Red Cross Hospital, Taplow, 1 September 1915 (debility and defective teeth); discharged to furlough, 5 October 1915; marched into Depot, Weymouth, 19 October 1915. Commenced return to New Zealand on board HMNZT 'Rotorua', 16 December 1915; disembarked New Zealand, 3 February 1916; discharged (no longer physically fit for war service - defective right eye), 30 March 1916.
