'Whilst hospital orderly, 1st Maori Contingent, attending to wounded under fire at the Apex, Gallipoli, on August 8th 1915. On the same date, work in attending to a large number of wounded in shelter to left of Apex and carrying them to places of safety. On August 9th, attending to wounded under fire near the Farm, Chunuk Bair, not only of his own unit but large numbers of the wounded of 4 British Battalions whose stretcher bearers were too far back to be of immediate assistance.'
