War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 13 November 1915; disembarked Suez, 20 December 1915. Joined 2nd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, Ismailia, 6 February 1916, and posted to A Company. Admitted to NZ Auxiliary Venereal Camp, Ismailia, 25 February 1916; transferred to No 17 General Hospital, Alexandria, 19 April 1916 (syphilis); refused further treatment, 22 April 1916; discharged to duty, 3 May 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 20 May 1916; joined Bn, in the field, 20 June 1916, and posted to A Company. Found guilty, 7 August 1916, of being absent from 1230pm parade: deprived of 5 days' pay. Wounded in action, 15 September 1916 (gun shot wound, back); admitted to No 38 Casualty Clearing Station, 16 September 1916; transferred to No 23 General Hospital, Etaples, 18 September 1916; to England, 28 September 1916, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham, 30 September 1916. Found guilty, 18 January 1917, of when on Active Service, of (1) breaking out of camp while a hospital patient at 6 am, 6 January 1917, and remaining absent until 4.30 pm 17 January 1917; (2) being on licensed premises while a hospital patient; (3) being in possession of khaki while a hospital patient; (4) failing to obey a direct order given by an NCO; (5) breaking into camp: awarded 168 hours' detention, and forfeited 2 days' pay. Admitted to Venereal Section, NZ Command Depot, Codford, 18 February 1917; discharged from Venereal Section, 20 April 1917. Admitted to No 3 NZ General Hospital, Codford, 30 April 1917 (mumps). Found guilty of drunkenness, 2 May 1917; fined 10/-.
