'This man showed great courage whilst stretcher bearing and repeatedly returned with his stretcher squad to the front line removing wounded lying in shell holes. By his cheerfulness and coolness under sweeping fire from machine guns he kept up the spirit of his squad and was successful in rescuing many wounded men who were lying out under gunfire. He showed a magnificent example to the other men of endurance and devotion to duty under the most desperate conditions.'
