Meritorious Service Medal 'This man showed great courage whilst stretcher bearing and repeatedly returned with his stretcher squad to the front line removing wounded lying in shell holes. By his cheerfulness and coolness under sweeping fire from machine guns he kept up the spirit of his squad and was successful in rescuing many wounded men who were lying out under gunfire.
