Bar to Military Cross 'While making a personal reconnaissances of our outpost line he encountered a party of four of the enemy who had filtered through the line. He attacked them single-handed without hesitation. Shooting two with his pistol he closed with the others and knocked down one with his fist, whereupon the other fled. He showed a fine example of courage and determination.'

He carried out several reconnaissance patrols over difficult country when the position of the enemy was unknown information. Later, during an advance, he led a bombing party against an enemy machine-gun post and caused the crew to be captured. Throughout he set a splendid example to his men.'
