Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative. On the 25th August 1918 during operations near Grevillers Cpl Hampton took his Lewis gun through heavy shell and machine-gun fire to an advance position on the flank and although his No 1 and 2 and himself were badly wounded he continued to use his gun so effectively that his platoon was able to advance and gain its objective. This N.C.O. set a magnificent example to his comrades.'
Source: 'London Gazette' Date: Mention in Despatches 'Period 21 September 1916 to 25 February 1917. This man acted as Company Runner for the past 12 months and has done excellent work. On all occasions he has successfully carried messages between his Company and Battalion Headquarters and frequently under very trying circumstances. On the Somme he assisted others in carrying in wounded from No Mans Land under heavy enemy shell fire.'
