'For conspicuous gallantry and initiative. On the 25th August 1918 during operations near Grevillers Cpl Hampton took his Lewis gun through heavy shell and machine-gun fire to an advance position on the flank and although his No 1 and 2 and himself were badly wounded he continued to use his gun so effectively that his platoon was able to advance and gain its objective. This N.C.O. set a magnificent example to his comrades.'
