Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of a company forming part of the leading wave of an assault. When his company suffered heavily from machine gun fire and was held up, accompanied by an N.C.O. he went forward to a "pillbox," rushed the machine gun, and captured it with eight prisoners, thereby enabling the advance to continue. Although twice buried by shells he came back to report to his commanding officer through heavy fire, and then rejoined his company.'
