'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When the enemy in superior force attacked the line held by the battalion, the company officer was killed, and this officer at once went forward to the advanced posts and took over the duty, going from post to post cheering and reorganizing the garrisons and checking the enemy advance. At one point, when a determined attempt was made to force a sap, he led a bombing party and forced the enemy back.'
