Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the attack on Messines on 7th June 1917, and also during construction of a Communication Trench near Messines on 8th June 1917. This Officer was in command of a platoon and during a
period of intense and concentrated shell fire by enemy heavy guns, by his coolness, bravery and utter disregard for personal safety inspired and encouraged his men in the work on consolidation of a support position. Also on 8th June 1917, near
Armentieres, near Messines while his platoon was exposed to a very heavy shell fire during the construction of a communication trench, by his coolness and conspicuous bravery (up to the time he was severely wounded) he held his men
together and by his encouraging and inspiring example expedited the completion of this important work.'
