Military Medal 'Operations about Flers, 15th September 1916 and following days, taking of the Grid Trench, north east of Flers, 1st & 2nd October 1916. This young non-commissioned officer has been in command of the battallion signallers, and communications throughout all the operations from the 15th September to the 3rd October, (inclusive). He has worked unceasingly day and night, and set an example to his men, and despite the ruinous effect of shellfire on his lines, he has gone out to repair them , and by his example encouraged his men to keep communications open at all costs. His conduct throughout has been admirable and the work done by his signallers beyond all praise.'
Source: 'London Gazette' Date: Bar to Military Medal 'For gallantry and valiant leadership. This NCO, in the absence of the Battalion Signal Officer, devolved the task of organising the various means of communication from Company Headquaters to Battalion Headquaters during the operations carried out by the 2nd Wellington Regiment against La Basse Ville and the enemy system of defence immediately to the north of the village on 31st July. By his energy and personal efforts he showed a magnificent example to the whole Battalion Staff of Signallers and by his bravery and devotion to duty under the extraordinarily heavy shellfire and enemy barrages, Sgt Gordon did all that man could do to maintain communications and extracted from his entire staff a very high standard of work. When the wires to Company Headquaters were smashed, as they often were, by shellfire he himself went out to ascertain the cause and assisted in effecting repairs. Sergeant Gordon proved himself a splendid organiser and a very brave soldier. His conduct calls for the highest praise.'
