'Locality Crest Trench to Factory Corner. During the operations of the 1st New Zealand Infantry Brigade 16/18th and 24/28 September this man worked continually under a very heavy artillery fire maintaining communication. No matter how heavy the fire was as soon as the lines were cut out he went to repair and his extraordinary bravery and untiring efforts in conjunction with the work of other linesmen resulted in communication being successfully maintained so that at no time was communication interrupted long enough to prove serious'

Bar to Military Medal

'On 26th August in the operations near Bapaume this NCO displayed great gallantry in his work as a linesman at the forward station of his brigade. In the early morning during a heavy hostile bombardment this station was blown in, all lines carried away. Regardless of his own safety and of the enemy fire he immediately restored the communications. His work was of the greatest value as an attack was launched by the Brigade shortly afterwards. Again on 30th August in the face of severe artillery and machine-gun fire he laid and repaired lines to Battalions throughout the day. His splendid courage and gallantry throughout the whole of the operations was a fine example to his men and very materially assisted the operations carried out by his Brigade.'
