War service: Egypt, Western Front Embarked Wellington, 1 May 1916; disembarked Suez, 9 June 1916. Embarked Alexandria, 26 July 1916; disembarked Southampton, England, 7 August 1916, and marched into Camp Sling, 8 August 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 28 August 1916; joined 2nd Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 5 October 1916, and posted to 4th Company. Wounded, 22 November 1916 (gun shot wound, neck), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station, 23 November 1916; to 13th General Hospital, Boulogne, 26 November 1916; to No 1 Convalescent Depot, Boulogne, 2 December 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 14 December 1916. Court of Enquiry (no date recorded) concluded: 'The injury was caused during the course of Lewis Machine Gun practice by the rebound of some hard substance from the earth mound in front of which the target was placed and ... no blame was attachable to anyone.' Admitted to No 1 NZ Field Ambulance, 21 December 1916, and transferred to No 2 NZ Field Ambulance; rejoined Bn, in the field, 3 January 1917 (no further details recorded).
