Military Medal

'At the Grid Trench, north West of Flers on the 27th September, this private, who is a stretcher bearer, proceeded with his company to the front line trenches where the casualties had been very heavy. He went out into the open time after time to bring in wounded men who were lying in the open, where there was still very heavy machine-gun fire at the time, and he undoubtedly saved the lives of many men who would other wise have been killed. He displayed great bravery and was quite regardless of danger, and his example had a markedly steadying effect on the other men in the vicinity.'
