'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. At the assault on Belle Vue Ridge on October 12th, this non-commissioned-officer was in command of a Lewis Gun Section. With great pluck and determination he led his men forward, and though every man of his section was either killed or wounded by machine gun and snipers'fire, he brought his gun into action against the enemy, remaining alone with it till after dark, when he rejoined his Platoon which was consolidated in the rear of the position he had taken up.'
