'Action in front of Belle Vue Spur, west of Passchendaele, 12th October 1917, and following days. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. This man showed conspicuous bravery and devotion to duty as a stretcher bearer during the whole of the above operations. For two days and two nights he carried under enemy shell and machine gun fire. His untiring efforts and personal bravery saved the lives of many of his comrades.'
