Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during the operations before Passchendaele Ridge on 12th, 13th and 14th October 1917. This NCO was in command of his platoon and led his men forward with great skill and coolness in spite of the heavy machine gun and rifle fire which held up the advance. He selected and consolidated a position with exceptional ability. During the whole time the Battalion was in the line he set a splendid example of bravery and endurance to his men, and thus contributed largely to the successful establishment
of a strong front line.'

keenness in the line and in any special operation, and his reliability have set a splendid example to all his men.'
Source: London Gazette Date: Mentioned in Despatches 'Gallantry and fearlessness as a Patrol Leader. In preparation for a raid on the enemy trenches by a party from the Company in the Boutillerie Sector near Armentieres, on the night of 16th November 1916, Corporal Gillespie repeatedly reconnoitred
the intervening ground and the enemy's defences, and the success of the raid was largely due to his preparatory work and to his bold yet careful leading of the raiding party into the hostile trenches.'
