'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 30th September 1918, at Crevecoeur the canal was in the hands of the enemy. It was necessary to obtain a reliable report concerning crossing places. This NCO volunteered to undertake this special and dangerous work. He went and made a thorough and complete reconnaissance of the canal and located bridges and crossing places which were essential to the battalion in order that they might move to assembly positions on the morning of the 1st October. The whole of this reconnaissance was carried out under shell and rifle fire which was obviously intended to prevent any such reconnaissance from being made. His report was clear and accurate in every detail and proved invaluable to the Battalion. On the three subsequent days he performed much good work in establishing liaison on the left flank and supplied information which was particularly valuable to Battalion Headquarters.'
