War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 5 April 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 11 June 1917, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 6 July 1917; joined, 3rd Bn, Auckland Infantry Regiment, in the field, 25 July 1917. Wounded in action, 4 October 1917 (gun shot wound, left thigh, left hand: severe), and admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance; transferred same day to No 4 Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to 53rd General Hospital, Boulogne, 11 October 1917; to England, 1 February 1918, and admitted to No 1 London General Hospital ('dangerously ill'). Transferred to No 1 NZ General Hospital, Brockenhurst, 7 March 1918. Classified unfit by NZ Medical Board, 20 April 1918, and placed on NZ Roll. Embarked Southampton, 31 July 1918, for transfer to HT 'Marama' at Marseilles, France; discharged, 28 April 1920 (no longer fit for War Service on account of wounds received in action).
