Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the operations in front of Mailly Maillet on 26th March 1918, this N.C.O. displayed exceptional coolness under heavy machine and artillery fire and called and reorganised his men. Going forward with great dash he captured a heavy German machine gun after putting its crew out of action. During the consolidation of the position won, an enemy move was reported on our exposed flank. Sergeant Gaffaney, with great initiative and energy, hastened a Lewis Gun forward and secured the position.'
