Enlisted with rank of private and posted to B Company, 10th Reinforcements, Trentham Camp, Upper Hutt, 15 November 1915. Proceeded overseas from Wellington on board HMNZT , 4 March 1916.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt, 10 April 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria, Egypt on board HMT 'Kinfauns Castle' to France, 13 April 1916; disembarked at Marseilles, France, April 1916. Taken on strength, 2nd Battalion, Wellington Infantry Regiment, and posted to 9th (Hawke's Bay) Company, in the field, 17 May 1916.

Admitted to 2nd New Zealand Field Ambulance, 18 October 1916; discharged and rejoined unit, in the field, 18 November 1916.
