'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. In the Bapaume Sector throughout the operations of August 24th/September 4th, this man who was a Company Runner, repeatedly carried messages of great importance to both Platoons and Battalion Headquarters through heavy artillery and machine gun fire, at great personal risk but with utter disregard for danger. His gallantry and devotion to duty was of a very high order.'
