Embarked Wellington, 5 April 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 11 June 1917, and marched in to Sling Camp.

Found guilty, 9 July 1917, of being absent without leave: forfeited 2 days' pay by Royal Warrant.

Proceeded overseas to France, 23 July 1917; joined 1st Bn, Otago Infantry Regiment, in the field, 30 August 1917.

Reported Missing in Action, 12 October 1917.

Court of Enquiry, held in the field at Brewery Camp, 17 November 1917, concluded: 'No evidence available. Taking into consideration the circumstances of the attack of 12th Oct 1917 it is reasonable to suppose the above/nd was Killed in Action in the attack on Belle Vue Spur 12th Oct 1917.'
