Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, France, 9 April 1916. Attached to No 1 Australian Tunnelling Company, in the field, 30 May 1916. Attached to NZ Engineers Tunnelling Company, 2 December 1916. Rejoined Bn from attachment, 24 April 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 23 July 1917. Found guilty, 2 August 1917, of being absent without leave: failed to report at 6.30 am at Victoria Station for return to France. Rejoined Bn, in the field, 6 August 1917.
