'At the assault on Belle Vue Ridge on October 12th this Non commissioned officer showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He led his section forward with great dash under very heavy fire. The Section was considerably cut up, but with his coolness and energy, he reorganised the men and consolidated the position under heavy shell fire. Afterwards, though thoroughly worn out, he volunteered for stretcher bearing, making many trips, and by so doing he helped to save many lives, by his own work, and the example shown to others of his Company.'
