'At Ypres on the 23rd October 1917 this runner displayed the very greatest bravery and devotion to duty. When carrying an urgent message from his Company Commander, he, without hesitation, passed through the enemy barrage, notwithstanding the fact that he was often knee deep in mud, and rarely failed to deliver his messages. While his Company was holding the Front Posts at Cameron Covert from Nov 29th to Dec 2nd 1917. This runner also carried messages from company to Battalion H.Q. and to the Posts under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. Many of these messages had to be taken in daylight in full view of the enemy, and it was due to Private Findlay's efforts that communication was maintained. Throughout both the above periods this runner was conspicuous for his bravery and devotion to duty under the most trying circumstances, and was a magnificent example to his comrades.'
