Mentioned in Despatches 'For conspicuous courage and devotion to duty on 4th October, 1917 near St Julien. During heavy shelling at the Battery position on the 4th instant, this NCO
displayed great courage in handling his men, both gunners and ammunition parties, thereby setting them a fine personal example. During the bombardment several gunners were casualties, in assisting them to a place of safety he himself was wounded.'
