Military Cross 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the 14th June 1917, when reconnaissance parties had been driven out of the enemy's front line by heavy shell and Trench Mortar fire and the Company Commander severely wounded, he went forward, took command of this Company, led through the uncut wire, established and consolidation his position under the same heavy fire and by his coolness and disregard of danger, set a fine example to his new Command, who
thereby instrumental in assisting in driving the enemy from an important tactical position. His work throughout has been most marked on all occasions.'

bridgehead. He was without support for some time, as other companies had lost direction. A strong counter attack forced him back to the canal bank, but he
reorganised and held on successfully.
