In England he met a Miss Wilfred Stead and became engaged to her. In March 1919 he was made the subject of an affiliation proceedings and ordered to 10s per week until Miss Stead's child became 16 years of age. A suit for breach of promise was also commenced, and the mother of the child awarded the sum of £1000 as damages. In June 1919 Ennis absconded and was not seen subsequently.

Metropolitan Police report: 'At 12.20 a.m. 14.6.19, a man dressed in khaki was seen to jump into the Thames from Lambeth Bridge, and it is presumed was drowned, as he was not seen again.'

Letter from Ennis, dated 9 June 1919, was received at Administrative Headquarters, NZEF, London, 11 June 1919: 'Don't worry about me further, - when you get this I will be finished. I can't stand the disgrace and worry of the last few months any longer, and am going to the river to-night. Sooner or later I will be found and you will know.'
