Military Medal 'Operations British front in the vicinity of the Foret de Mormal 5th November 1918. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the above operations Private Ellis acted as a Battalion observer. Mounted on a horse he rode up to the
very front line on several occasions with messages, then rode down the roads to see the flanks of one Battalion and of the neighbouring units. On one occasions, on the way back to Battalion Headquarters, he had to pass through a terrific barrage of high explosive and shrapnel, but he coolly rode through it and reported,
then as coolly rode through it to the line. His disregard for danger was very remarkable and the service he rendered throughout the day cannot be over estimated.'
