'East of Ypres on the 4th October 1917 this soldier displayed the utmost bravery and devotion to duty. When an enemy machine gun was holding up the advance on the left flank of his Company he rushed forward in spite of the heavy machine gun fire and engaged the gun with rifle grenades whilst his Sergeant rushed in under cover of the grenades and killed the crew. Throughout the attack his fearless courage and extreme devotion to duty were a magnificent example to others.'
