Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the field at Briastre on 12th October, 1918. This NCO took charge of his platoon when his officer, platoon Sgt and Senior Cpl were simultaneously wounded, and calmly indifferent to heavy machine gun fire from his left rear flank proceeded to consolidate his position on the objective, at the same time maintaining constant touch with his flanks. His dispositions were well thought out and tactically sound, and throughout he showed great initiative in a sudden emergency.'
