Enlisted with rank of private and posted to New Zealand Medical Corps, 7th Reinforcements, Trentham Camp, Upper Hutt, 9 September 1915. Proceeded overseas from Wellington, 10 October 1915.

Disembarked Suez, Egypt, 17 November 1915.

Posted to New Zealand Mounted Field Ambulance, Egypt, 1 August 1916. Posted to New Zealand Mounted Rifles Brigade, 12 March 1917; transferred to New Zealand Mounted Rifles Training Regiment and Base Depot, Moascar, Egypt, 11 March 1917; proceeded overseas to France, 15 March 1917.

Admitted to No 7 General Hospital and placed on 'dangerously ill' list, St Omer, France, 7 April 1917 (Cerebro-Spinal Meningitis); removed from dangerously ill list, 18 April 1917; transferred to convalescent hospital and reported to be progressing favourably, 5 May 1917; evacuated to England and admitted to New Zealand Convalescent Hospital, Hornchurch, 10 August 1917. Classified unfit by medical board and placed on New Zealand Roll, 19 September 1917. Commenced return to New Zealand from Plymouth, England, on board HMNZT 'Tainui', 2 November 1917.

Discharged, no longer physically fit for war service on account of illness contracted while on active service, 3 April 1918.
