Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry whilst acting as Company Sergeant Major near Bapaume on 26th August 1918. When all his officer had become casualties he reorganised his Company under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He supervised the digging in of his Company and by his cheerfulness and coolness under fire he put great heart into the men.'
