Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, at GRAVENSTAFEL on 4 October 1918. As a stretcher bearer under heavy shelling and machine gun fire he attended not only to the wounded of our men, but to those of the neighbouring unit and the enemy. However, idle for not a minute nor thought of personal safety, he worked with unflagging zeal and devotion. When shells burst near him and others sought shell holes he continued dressing wounds and by his fine example of courage was an inspiration to all ranks.'
