Military Medal 'For conspicuous bravery near Hebuterne during the night 27th/28th March 1918. The troops on his right having been forced back by an enemy counter attack, his platoon was ordered to form a defensive flank. The platoon sergeant was wounded during the advance, and Corporal Dean took charge and succeeded in preventing the enemy turning his flank. He then led a section forward and rushed a machinegun which was enfilading our flank, killing the crew and putting the gun out of action. His coolness and leadership under heavy machine-gun fire and rifle fire was
a splendid example to his men.'
