War service: Western Front Embarked Wellington, 29 July 1916; disembarked Devonport, England, 28 September 1916, and marched into Sling Camp. Proceeded overseas to France, 10 October 1916; taken on strength, 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 29 October 1916. Found guilty, 15 January 1917, of being absent without leave: deprived of 14 days' pay, and forfeited additional 2 days' pay. Appointed Temporary Corporal, 17 June 1917. On leave to United Kingdom, 6 October 1917; appointed Temporary Sergeant, 13 October 1917; promoted Corporal, 13 October 1917; rejoined unit from field, 23 October 1917. Admitted to No 3 NZ Field Ambulance, 10 December 1917 (syphilis), and transferred same day to 10th Casualty Clearing Station; to No 7 Convalescent Depot, 11 December 1917; to No 51 General Hospital, Etaples, 13 December 1917; discharged to No 6 Convalescent Depot, 26 January 1918; period of treatment for venereal disease, 14 December 1917-13 January 1918; new period of treatment, 14-26 January 1918.
