Proceeded overseas to France, 10 October 1916; taken on strength, 3rd Bn, NZ Rifle Brigade, in the field, 29 October 1916.

Found guilty, 15 January 1917, of being absent without leave: deprived of 14 days' pay, and forfeited additional 2 days' pay.

Appointed Temporary Corporal, 17 June 1917.

On leave to United Kingdom, 6 October 1917; appointed Temporary Sergeant, 13 October 1917; promoted Corporal, 13 October 1917; rejoined unit from field, 23 October 1917.
