Disembarked Devonport, England, marched into Sling Camp and taken on strength, 3rd Canterbury-Otago (Reserve) Battalion, and posted to 2nd (Canterbury) Company, 28 March 1917. Taken on strength 3rd Canterbury Battalion, 4th Infantry Brigade, and posted to 13th (North Canterbury-Westland) Company, 2 May 1917. Proceeded overseas with unit for France, 28 May 1917.

Found guilty, 7 January 1918, of malingering, in that he returned from a working party without a reasonable excuse: awarded 7 days' Field Punishment No 2.
