Military Medal 'At Zero Hour on June 7th Headquarters of the New Zealand Pioneer Batt. at Red Lodge was heavily shelled with high explosive and gas shells. During the first few minutes the regimental aid post dugout was struck by a 5.9 inch shell and wrecked,
several men being wounded and Pte Piwa Mihere buried under the wreckage. Sergt Crawley ran out of his dugout to extricate Pte Mihere who was pinned down by some fallen iron. Shells continued to arrive the whole time Sergt Crawley was
working, and the danger was increased by the bursting shells. Sergt Crawley's gallantry undoubtedly saved Pte Mihere's life at great risk to his own, for a shell fell within a few feet of him during the quarter of an hour he was at work.'
